| High Security Locks vs. Regular Locks |
|
There are 2 distinct types of door locks - regular and high
security.
There are 3 grades of locks:
- Grade 1 - commercial - industrial
- Grade 2 - heavy duty residential / light duty commercial
- Grade 3 - residential (very light duty)
Regular locks most often can be readily picked open or very easily compromised by
drilling. Regular locks can be made more pick resistant by insertion
of "mushroom" or "spool" top pins (or drivers) there is still
absolutely no way to make them more drill resistant.
Most
residences have locks such as Kwikset, Weiser, Weslock, Dexter,
EZ-Set, etc. Even such honored brands as Schlage, Corbin, Russwin,
Baldwin, and others are usually equipped with "Regular" cylinders -
even in their grade 2 and grade 1 offerings.
High security
cylinders are made to be "virtually" pick-proof and usually have
hardened steel inserts in them to help prevent physical attack by
drilling. There are a variety of types of high security cylinders
made by several different companies.
High security cylinders
usually cost in the $60.00 - 85.00 range and keys are usually $10.00
or more.

| Master-Key Systems Information |
|
What is a Master-key System?
The best and easiest
way to explain master-keying is to think of a hotel. The owner has
one key that fits everything - all the rooms, store-rooms, offices,
etc. The office manager has a key that fits only the offices. The
maids have a key that only fit the rooms. Then the guest have a key
that fit only the room they are staying in.
If one of the
guests leave and take their key, then a locksmith can come and
invalidate that key and re-key the room to a new key. This will not,
however, affect the other keys - unless the locksmith is poorly
trained. Or if one of the house-keeping personnel leave, the doors
can be re-keyed to replace that key which will not affect the rest
of the keys. Although the thought of being able to carry one key
that would allow you to access every door in your business sounds
like the ultimate in convenience - you must recognize what a
masterkey system is and weigh the advantages against the
disadvantages normally found in masterkey systems.
A
masterkey allows management, maintenance and security personnel to
carry a single key to access designated groups of doors (or the
entire building) while keys issued to non-management employees will
open only single doors.
A big disadvantage is: more than one
key will open a single lock. That means it is possible that a key,
not intended to open a specific lock, might do so. Such a key is
called a "Ghost Key". Consequently, the masterkey system that is
designed for your facility must be properly crafted to eliminate
that possibility. Once the system is in place, key control is the
secret to the integrity of the system. Key records should be audited
regularly and no keys duplicated without your specific
authorization.
Should you masterkey?
That's a
decision you should make after a careful analysis of your
requirements. We can help you design, implement and monitor a
masterkey system that won't give you nightmares. How's that for
convenience?
